‘...red rock ponderosa country...’
No one can take the beauty of Sedona’s red rock and ponderosa country for granted even if they live there and see it everyday. Even if one wanted, the eyes could not ignore the greatness of such a masterpiece that includes monoliths like Coffee Pot, Cathedral, and Bell Rock. Nestled in Arizona’s Coconino National Forest it is no wonder that Sedona is a mecca for those who seek the beauty of God’s creation with millions of tourists traveling here from around the world each year.
‘...ride the scenic red rock highway...’
The best way to ride into Sedona is via the Red Rock Scenic Highway. Take A179 from the south off of I-17 exit 298. Red Rock Highway will take you past Bell Rock and through the Village of Oak Creek (Big Park), home of the annual Verde Valley Music Festival. One would not want to miss the Tlaquepaque an Arts and Crafts community on the left just after the Oak Creek bridge. Tlaquepaque reminds one of the ‘El Parian’ in old San Pedro, Mexico with the flavor of an old mexican shopping village.
‘...jeep tours get you close to the beauty of Sedona...’
If you are planning to stay for a few days there are some great bike rides out of Sedona . For a fantastic view of the Sedona area ride your bike up to the Church of The Red Rocks. To appreciate the many red rock formations you should take one of the many jeep tours that are available. To cool off in the summer visit Slide Rock State Park. Take a break and visit the many tourist’s shoppes in uptown Sedona on the ‘Si Birch Memorial Hwy 89 just before the highway starts to wind up through the Oak Creek Canyon heading up to Flagstaff.
‘...ride up Oak Creek Canyon...’
Just north of Sedona on Hwy 89A begins one of the most popular motorcycle rides in Arizona. Hwy 89A winds up through Oak Creek Canyon and Oak Creek twisting back and forth up the Mogollon Rim. The ride ends on the high ponderosa plateau intersecting with interstate I-17. From here you can run back down I-17 to the Sedona Scenic Highway, ride on into Flagstaff just a few miles north, or turn around and enjoy the ride back down the canyon. There are several places to stop along the way, to take a dip in the cool clear waters of Oak Creek.
