VISIT THE SITES BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ON SHOW LOW ARIZONA

The name ‘Show Low” came about from a card game that was dealt two early settlers of the area to decide which one would run the early settlement in the area.  Corydon E. Cooley, an early scout for the U.S. government and friend to the Chief of the White Mountain
Apache Tribe, won the ‘low hand’ and since that time ‘Show Low’ became the name of this Arizona town.  Back in those days Show Low was a ranching community of early settlers.  There were also a large population of Mormons who lived there.  Just northwest of the Show Low the early Mormon settlement of Adairville was established in the valley with the settlers mainly involved with farming & agriculture.  Later the settlement was renamed ‘Fools Hollow’ as nobody but a fool would try to make a living there.  The tiny settlement of Adair has long since been covered by Fool Hollow Lake that was formed as Fool Hollow Dam was completed in the mid 1950’s.  Now one of the premier recreation areas in the state park system of Arizona, Fool Hollow Lake provides visitors with an abundance of outdoor
activities.  The campground is easily accessible to bikers with excellent campsites.  The roads are all paved.  Less than an hour away from Show Low you can find the Petrified Forest National Park.  There is some great riding north to Holbrook down to  St. Johns and returning west to Show Low.  This ride is easily done in a day including a ride thru the Petrified Forest.  Just south of St. Johns one can pitch their tent at another State Park, Lyman Lake State Park.  This is the oldest park in the Arizona system.  If you are returning to Show Low take some time out at Lyman to take a short hike on the many trails to see some petroglyphs.  There is a lot of wildlife in the area so make sure to take your camera.  You might even see on of the several Bison owned by the Lyman Lake Buffalo Club.  Another ride depending on where you are headed is Hwy 60 south to Globe thru the Ft. Apache Indian Reservation.  Ride safe and enjoy your trip!
