Arizona’s ‘Home of the Mother Road’

‘..located on the longest remaining stretch of Route 66..’

Initially called ‘Prescott Junction’, Seligman was the Santa Fe Railroad’s connecting junction south to Prescott, Arizona.  Seligman is not just another stop on what’s left of the old ‘Mother Road’, route 66 in Arizona.  This stretch of the old highway that includes Seligman was designated as Arizona’s ‘Historic Route 66’ back in 1987.  This came about by the efforts of Seligman’s Chamber of Commerce.  Seligman is located  on the longest remaining stretch of old route 66 that wandered from California to Chicago, Illinois.

‘...a place to rest the iron and step back into time...’

Today, Seligman offers bikers riding the mother road a place to rest the iron and step back into time.  Without the memory of ‘getting your kicks on route 66’, Seligman would most likely have gone away due to the interstate highway system.  However, Seligman is alive and catering to Route 66 ‘buffs’ from around the world.  There are several souvenir stores with well stocked shelves with lots to choose from.  Other than the old motel signs the most interesting stop is the famous ‘Snow Cap’ Drive-In.

‘...a place to rest the iron and step back into time...’

Seligman is located on the east end of the longest remaining stretch of Rt. 66.  The location provides a great starting point for a 38 mile ride to the Hackberry General store.  The road takes you through Peach Springs, the Hualapai Reservation, and past Grand Canyon Caverns... one of the largest dry caves in the world.  Riding your scooter along the tracks of the Sante Fe on the high desert plain with no traffic is a real treat. The Hackberry store is a great place to take a break before you head back to Seligman or continue on for 15 more miles westward to Kingman, Arizona, the county seat of Mohave County.
