The Old Pueblo
...one of the oldest towns in the United States...
The ‘Olde Pueblo’, as Tucson is still referred to today, is one of the oldest towns in the United States. Originally settled by Indians, then Spaniards, and then acquired by the US in 1854 under the Gadsen Purchase with Mexico, Tucson has flown three national flags. In 1797 the Spanish Franciscans built a mission just south of present day Tucson called ‘San Xavier Del Bac’, known as the White Dove of the Desert’. The mission is still active today located nine miles south of Tucson on the Tohona O’odham Indian Reservation The Tucson Presidio was established in 1775.

...home of the ‘Old Tucson studios...

Hidden under the city, el Presidio de Tucson’s location is currently being identified. Just 63 miles from the border, Tucson has a mixed cultural heritage. The city is rich with fascinating museums, events, and attractions. Take a ride out to ‘Old Tucson Studios’ and experience the old west. Since 1939 over 100 major movies have been filmed at Old Tucson. Before you go stop by any major hotel and pick up a $3 discount coupon. If you are in to ‘flying’ (other than on a motorcycle) you must visit the Pima Air & Space Museum which includes the AMARG ‘boneyard’

...some of the most spectacular scenery in the southwest...

Since ‘ridin’ is what we are all about check out the Catalina Highway. Ride up to Summerhaven on Mt. Lemmon, enjoy the most spectacular scenery in the southwest, and top it off with a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie at the Mt. Lemmon Cafe. By the time you get down off the mountain you will be ready to cut into one of those original ‘Cowboy’ steaks at Pinnacle Peaks located in Trail Dust Town on Tanque Verde just south of Grant.

...prehistoric landmark, Picacho Peak guided early travelers...

The unique shape of the 1,500-foot Picacho Peak has been used as a landmark by travelers since prehistoric times. One of the first recordings was in the 1700’s by the Anza Expedition as it passed through the area.In 1848, the Mormon Battalion constructed a wagon road through Picacho Pass. The forty-niners on their way to California used this road. In the late 1850’s the Butterfield Overland Stage was carrying passengers through this area. Picacho Peak’s most noted historic event occurred on April 15, 1862, when Confederate and Union scouting parties met in the Battle of Picacho Pass during the Civil War. This was the largest Civil War clash to take place in Arizona.

...visit Kartchner Caverns and Saguaro National Park...

If you like to explore caves then you will want to be sure to take a half day and ride down towards Benson on I-10 and take Hwy 90 (exit 302) nine miles to Kartchner Caverns State Park. It doesn’t get much better than this and there are campsites available. Perhaps the most popular attraction with the most annual visitors is Saguaro National Park. Offering over 165 acres of hiking trails if you are 62 or over make sure you use your senior pass. There is certainly more than enough to do down Tucson way and with 360 days of sunshine plenty of time to do it.http://www.sanxaviermission.org/http://www.sanxaviermission.org/http://www.tucsonaz.gov/dig1.htmlhttp://www.oldtucson.com/http://www.oldtucson.com/http://www.pimaair.org/index.phphttp://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/forest/recreation/scenic_drives/scenic_images/cat_hwy.jpghttp://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/forest/recreation/scenic_drives/catalina_hwy.shtmlhttp://www.mt-lemmon.com/mtcafe.htmhttp://www.pinnaclepeaktucson.com/index.htmhttp://www.traildusttown.com/http://www.azparks.gov/Parks/parkhtml/kartchner.htmlhttp://www.nps.gov/sagu/shapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2shapeimage_3_link_3shapeimage_3_link_4shapeimage_3_link_5shapeimage_3_link_6shapeimage_3_link_7shapeimage_3_link_8shapeimage_3_link_9shapeimage_3_link_10shapeimage_3_link_11shapeimage_3_link_12

Tombstone

The popularity of Tombstone today rests solely on the story of the
most famous ‘old west’ shootout between the Earps, the Clantons, and the McLaureys...the ‘Gunfight at the OK Corral’.  At the time, Virgil Earp was the sheriff in town and had mandated that all weapons be surrendered within the city limits.  Virgil...            MORE !

Bisbee

Bisbee is certainly a must see stop when ridin’ Hwy 80 south from
Tomb stone.  If not because of the old Copper Queen mine then just for the walk through the main street of town.  The facade of the old buildings are well maintained with ‘old world’ appeal.  If you are in to antiques or collectibles...        MORE !
